I pressed Moon forward to the edge of the woods, glancing back at Yuliya, who hadn't mounted her horse when I'd started. Jewel was fast.

My cloak and hair flew out behind me, lightning seemed to pulse in Chornyy Samotsvit's legs. I grinned and looked down. I pushed wind behind us, so that it was pushing us even faster. I could barely see Jewel's legs touch the ground...in fact...they weren't. Wind was pushing her up, up and forward.

A youth called Peregrine saw through the trees two girls on horseback who seemed to be galloping. Vollo snorted with excitement, his steed always enjoyed a good race, for his very name meant speed in Latin. He grinned roguishly and positioned Vollo next the trail, ready to join the girls' race as soon as they drew level with him and Vollo.
